J1 J2 NCS Outdoor Experiential Learning Day
With a view to enhancing J1 J2 NCS students' Chinese language competency and learning interest, an Outdoor Experiential Learning Day was held on 17 th April at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum.
Designed both to entertain and to enlighten, the eight learning playzones of the Children's Discovery Gallery have offered our students lively, informative and enjoyable educational experiences.
At the learning playzones, as students roamed through marshes, penetrated underground and dived into the ocean, they also got to know various special species of birds, insects and sea creatures.
As a part of the Hong Kong community, besides learning Chinese, non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students should understand Chinese history and culture, learn about the development and cultural characteristics of the society in which they live. They also have to appreciate and respect different historical and cultural legacies.
At the museum, our students had the opportunity to explore life in a traditional New Territories village, take a look at the work of local archaeologists ,discover for themselves the artifacts excavated in Hong Kong in a series of games specially conceived for them.
Plus, students were also very interested in the ‘ Bruce Lee:Kung Fu ‧ Art ‧ Life’ exhibition that has portrayed the martial artist Bruce Lee’s achievements and contributions, as well as his significance in popular culture.
Last but not least, students completed a content and language integrated assignment as part of the learning programme. By incorporating outdoor experiential learning into the learning of Chinese as a second language, the J1 J2 NCS Outdoor Experiential Learning Day has provided an enjoyable and meaningful learning experience for all. The smiles on our adorable students’ faces tell us all.
